Some mid-life reflection…
It’s funny, in my middle age, picking up something I wanted to do as a kid as a hobby (costume design of some sort, making crazy things that were only in my head…) My hobby keeps me sane, and makes me feel better about the days where I just can’t do a lot - because I can always hunker down and make something pretty, no matter how shitty the rest of me feels. It relaxes me. Art therapy, if you will.
I really wanted to be a ballet dancer. And I got fairly far with that. And I still dance, because it’s the only exercise I REALLY enjoy and get good endorphins out of. And I need those endorphins to keep me going.
But the most ironic thing, is with the Ehlers Danlos syndrome, I’m happiest in water. Water doesn’t hurt me. And when I was really little, I wanted to BE a mermaid. Dragging me out of the pool was an epic battle. Turns out I really am a mermaid. My legs, though quite nice looking legs, feel like knives are running through them when I’m on dry land.
It’s funny how you still need your childhood dreams in the weirdest of ways.
